The BBC Gardeners World is still a quality magazine. I have the Royal Horticultural Society's A-Z of Gardening and that is also a very good book.
My main focus is on organic vegetable and fruit gardening, so I have a range of books dealing with this subject, and am building up a library on forest gardening now as well. There are good publications out there, it is just a matter of finding them. A good starting point is to see what the HDRA are promoting - http://www.hdra.org.uk
