Eskom has called on all South Africans to pull together over the next few months and use electricity sparingly by “Living Lightly†this summer as it continues its planned maintenance on generating units.
“The power system will remain tight until new generating capacity comes on stream and essential generation maintenance is done. Eskom calls on all electricity consumers to reduce their electricity usage as we move further into summer and continue with planned maintenance on the generating units,†said the utility in an update of the state of the power system on Monday.
Eskom said that the demand forecast and supply situation was looking better this week than last week.
“We have seen a few generating units that were out for maintenance coming back on line, thus relieving some pressure from the power system. Our request for our customers to keep demand as low as possible remains, in order to ensure that we continue with planned maintenance and have enough spare capacity in case of unplanned events.â€
South Africans are urged to switch off geysers and pool pumps; switch off non-essential lights; efficient use of air-conditioners and responding to TV alerts to reduce electricity usage.
Peak demand for the rest of this week is forecast at: 30 869 MW on Tuesday, 30 783 MW on Wednesday, 30 718 MW on Thursday, 30 248 MW on Friday, 28 955 MW on Saturday and 28 538 MW on Sunday.
