Turntable/amp problem

I remember having a similar problem on record players. It was down to feedback, the needle picking up the vibration off the speakers usually when the bass was turned up a lot or at high volume(or the speakers being too close to the record player). I sorted it out in two ways, cheaper record player just needed a small coin taped on top of the stylus head to weight it a bit (anti-vibration measure) and the better players had a counter weight at the opposite side of the stylus arm which should be adjustable. oh yea, if memory serves - record players had an extra ground connection that plugged into the amp - check that too,

I did previously check the three things you've raised:

I thought of feedback, but all my hi-fi components are where they've always stood, and originally I didn't have a problem.
I did check the counterweight, but the problem doesn't seem to be related to that.
The groundwire is connected to the amp in the way it should be, although just possibly there might be a break somewhere along the wire, hidden by its plastic outer -- although I doubt it.

My (rather amateur) thinking is that the problem could be either in the amp somewhere, or have something to to do with the cartridge.
