I have been doing a bit of reading......found this:

In tropical countries, viral encephalitis can be caused by mosquito- and tick-borne infections, such as yellow fever.

Both the young ones had viral pulmonary infections before we left for SA


Reading the above website may give more insight.

The paediatrician thought that the little prince had tick bite fever initially, but as there was no bite mark anywhere on his body or on his scalp, he decided to do the lumbar puncture.
