I say fiction. Wasn't she the first "American" woman but not the first woman in space? Wasn't that perhaps a Russian?????

I've changed my mind as I didn't read the question properly she was the first American but the first women was Russian .....Valentina something or other

Fiction.

Russian Valentina Tereshkova flew aboard the Vostok 6 on June 16, 1963. Sally Ride was the first American woman in space, flying aboard the space shuttle Challenger on June 18, 1983. Coincidentally, Sally Ride was also the youngest woman in space. She was 32 years old when she boarded the Challenger.
