The disastrous 7.1 earthquake on October 17 resulted in close to $3 billion in damage for San Francisco alone. The damage in the entire earthquake zone is estimated to be closer to $6 billion. The earthquake struck just before the third game of the World Series at Candlestick Park between the two Bay Area baseball teams, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's.
