If someone can point me in the right direction to where I can send my other-half's laptop, which has crashed in a huge way, it'd be greatly appreciated.
It was running Windows XP and oddly enough it's the 3rd system failure I have heard about in the past 4 months using this system. Perhaps it's co-incidence?
It has been looked at by the fellas from PC world who have been unable to get it to respond.
Apart from years of pictures, info, etc it has ALL my recipes etc on it. My back-up 'limited resource' flash driver is also 'dead' and only has a small amount of the info that I have built up over the many years.
Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe Ade can help here .. I would think that replacing the hard drive is a priority and then try to get data off the damaged hard drive
remember the guys at PC world's priority is to sell you new stuff certainly not to assist you keep old data

The stuff should be recoverable, if you get no assistance I can speak to someone who could do it for you probably.
Cheffie, is it the software or the harddisk that "crashed"?
If software then it shouldn't be a big problem, if it is the harddisk itself it might be a bit tricky since it is a laptop.
If it is the latter I suggest that you contact the manufacturer and ask them who they recommend to do a recovery. Sadly if it is a harddisk hardware failure chances are that they'll not be able to make a full recovery.

Sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle...
(I hate to preach, but everyone knows that they should back up their data, but still don't...what can I say!
I haven't had a lot of experience with laptop hard disks but they're pretty similar to desktop counterparts.
If you can hear the disk spinning you probably have a decent chance of data retrieval.
There are companies that provide data recovery services, but I dunno how much it costs and their success rates.
I would try plugging in the disk as a secondary disk on another pc and see if you can read it.
look at some companies on the net, like
http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/ or have a look into Spinrite from
http://www.grc.com, or there are many others...
(pc world would come at the bottom of the list!)

Hi Cheffie. Been a while since I have been on this site. Good to see you are all still around.
I agree with Ade. The best option would be to configure the 'crashed' drive as a secondary and read off all the data you can, then save it to the working drive and ensure to make a backup copy after this.
Sounds like you got it under control, to be having some professionals look at it. They would do something similar, but usually have some programs to read or recover from drives that have crashed, be it software or hardware crashes. I hope it is not going to set you back major with regards to cost.
If I were near by, I would have been more than glad to look at it and attempt a recovery.
