Pretoria - The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has pledged its commitment to the 49M energy saving campaign.
The 49M energy efficiency movement was launched in March 2011 by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba. It encourages individuals and businesses to lead energy-smart lifestyles, to save power, save the planet and save their pockets.
Since the establishment of the 49M initiative, many big companies have been signing a pledge committing themselves to using energy efficiently and educating their employees on efficient energy use.
Speaking at the pledge-signing ceremony held on Friday at the new GCIS ‘green’ building in Hatfiled, GCIS Acting CEO Phumla Williams said as government officials, they need to “lead the policies of governmentâ€.
The new building, she said, proved that government was working towards Vision 2030 and making sure that the GCIS played its part in conserving energy and water.
“Water is there to be consumed but also to be saved, and the same applies to electricity. If we don’t do something to assist Eskom, we will not get to 2030.â€
She said the GCIS was clear when it started to craft the specifications for the new building, ensuring that they responded to the call that all South Africans needed to conserve energy in order to reach 2030.
Eskom's Senior Manager: Strategic Marketing, Pieter Pretorius, congratulated GCIS for an amazing milestone, saying it clearly demonstrated a “step in the right directionâ€.
He noted that 109 partners, including corporate partners, and more than 250 000 South Africans have signed an individual pledge to save energy.
“We hope to reach 500 000 employees and educate them on how they can be energy efficient at work because it’s not only at home but also at work,†Pretorius said, adding that he hoped the GCIS would continue to conserve energy. - SAnews.gov.za
