  Holiday reads i am taking.....
Posted by: Icecub - 24-07-2006, 09:04 AM - Forum: The Book Club - Replies (1)

Some of the new books i bought for my holiday soon! :hols:

Vanished - Jodi Piccoult

Not being a great lover of the above author, but i did enjoy this book.

The Island - Victoria Hislop
Synopsis

On the brink of a life-changing decision, Alexis Fielding longs to find out about her mother's past. But Sofia has never spoken of it. All she admits to is growing up in a small Cretan village before moving to London. When Alexis decides to visit Crete, however, Sofia gives her daughter a letter to take to an old friend, and promises that through her she will learn more. Arriving in Plaka, Alexis is astonished to see that it lies a stone's throw from the tiny, deserted island of Spinalonga - Greece's former leper colony. Then she finds Fortini, and at last hears the story that Sofia has buried all her life: the tale of her great-grandmother Eleni and her daughters and a family rent by tragedy, war and passion. She discovers how intimately she is connected with the island, and how secrecy holds them all in its powerful grip...

Love on the rocks - Veronica Henry
Synopsis

Bruno Thorne is the self-crowned king of Mariscombe, a faded seaside resort crammed with chip shops and amusement arcades. But things are on the turn because the resort has been picked as a potential holiday hot-spot. Meanwhile, George Law wants to do for Mariscombe what Rick Stein did for Padstowe (even though he's not entirely sure what to do with a red mullet) and, thanks to a last minute cock-up by the estate agent, George outbids Bruno for the rundown Rocks hotel. At last he can realise his dream and, with his gorgeous ex-lingerie model girlfriend Lisa at his side, surely nothing can hold him back...But George hasn't counted on disgruntled locals, infuriating ex-wives...or Bruno Thorne's apparent interest in Lisa. With another splash hit on her hands, bestselling novelist Veronica Henry moves to the seaside and delivers the perfect holiday read.

  Good News!

18 year old Lonwabo Futha is South AfricaÂ’s latest cycling star. The product of a cycling development programme will be part of the 15 member South African team that will be taking part in the 2006 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships in Roturua from August 22 to 27. The Sunday Argus reports that he qualified for the New Zealand event during the National Mountain Bike Championships in Pretoria last week.

LonwaboÂ’s story highlights the success of the development cycling programme in the Eastern Cape. Futha, who lives in a shack in Tembani Road on the outskirts of Port Elizabeth, started his cycling career by riding 11 kilometres to a bus stop and then a further kilometre from the next bus stop to school every day.

Two and a half years ago, his friends Robert and Philemon Manyathi encouraged him to join them in the development cycling programme that is a strong focus of the Cyclo Pro Cycling club. Very soon, FuthaÂ’s natural talent was drawing the attention of the cycling world. He began entering in competitors at various levels. He was the top cross-country rider at the Eastern Cape championships a few weeks ago and was part of the under-19 team that won silver in the SA Track championships in Cape Town last year. He believes that the strong team spirit is one of the main reasons for the success of the Eastern Cape team.

FuthaÂ’s coach, Roger Bouton who is director of development for Cycling South Africa, is focusing on a strict training regimen for Futha over the next few weeks. It includes gym training to improve his power-to-weight ratio, skills training and rides of up to four hours long a few times a week. Bouton is hoping to secure a nutritional sponsor because a special diet is one of the key elements in FuthaÂ’s ability to compete at international level.

LonwaboÂ’s family are very proud of him, but are finding it hard to believe itÂ’s all real. After all, Lonwabo doesnÂ’t even know where New Zealand is! His father, Maboy is a gardener, and his mother, Noxolo, unemployed. He also has three younger sisters.

Futha does not have official sponsorship, but is part of the Macsteel Maestros of the Future Programme which offers development sportsmen and women sports psychology, nutritional advice, medical support and life skills training, all necessary components of top level competitors.

Lonwabo gives back into the community by helping to train the younger development cyclists at the Cyclo Pro Cycling Club. And next Â… He hopes to qualify for the Commonwealth Games and to become known as a professional rider.

Life is not fair, but God is!
Posted by: Pronkertjie - 23-07-2006, 05:30 PM - Forum: Christian Faith Praise - No Replies

Someone remarked the other day that life is not fair. He told me that although he does his work conscientiously, others are promoted instead of him all the time. What is more, his religion counts against him. Well, the original readers of the First Letter of Peter found themselves in exactly the same position. They were regarded as enemies of society. They were spoilsports who refused to worship the Roman gods. Therefore they were ridiculed, humiliated and dismissed by their employers.

Peter's message to believers was simple: we have to cling to our identity as believers in Christ if we want to live a meaningful life in an unfair world. Remember the following:

1. We are Christ's property. He bought us. His own blood was the price He paid for us (1 Peter 1:19). That is why Christ now determines how we live. His rules of life are ours. All we do, is follow in his footsteps.

2. We are part of the family of God's kingdom (1 Peter 2:10). Listen to what it says: Previously, you were like tramps and no one wanted to have anything to do with you, but now you are God's people. Previously, you had no idea what love and goodness really meant, but you got to know them from God. Eternal life is ours, now already and forever!

3. It will be hard for us sometimes, because we belong to another King Whose values differ from those of the world. Therefore, let us not be surprised if we do not win the competition for the most popular person at work (1 Peter 2:11-12): 11 Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.

Life is not fair. You can be sure that you are going to have trouble if you are serious about believing in Christ. However, He has warned you that you are a stranger in this world. Fortunately you know that you are a child of the King and have a permanent address in his new city. Therefore, you can shout with joy: Maranata, the Lord is coming! What is more, you know that God is a fair and just King. In his new world, the roles will be reversed for ever!

Prayer

Lord, I see the coming of a brand-new world.

I dream of a new earth that is free and fair.

Until I get there I will be holding your hand tightly.

My life's road is often steep and dangerous.

Every so often I come up against injustice, lovelessness and hate.

Please hold onto me tightly.

Let me faithfully follow the road You show me.

Please carry every child of yours that suffers today.

Please keep us covered with your blanket of love.

Shelter and protect us.

In the Name of Jesus,

Amen.

God bless

  back at work

its Sunday and I'm at work. Am not surprised to note that my colleague has not done one iota of my work. So I have a weeks worth to catch up. Can't be bothered to do it now. The work that I have come in to do today ( have to do a dozen sundays through the summer) has not been started by my storeman as he has swopped his days. Heaven help him when I see him tomorrow. Stringing up is too pleasent a punishment for him.

I have noticed a lack of work ethic in this country (being the UK that is), or is it that us Saffers have a work ethic? :mmm:
