From the IND website:
"From March 13 2006, there will be important changes in Immigration Rules, which will affect people applying for leave to remain, and indefinite leave to remain (or settlement), in the UK. The changes will take effect from 3 April this year.
The changes, in summary, are: -
For all employment-related categories of entry to the UK, and those who have entered under the Ancestry category, the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain (settlement) is now 5 years."

I was chatting to a friend last weekend and she was saying how amazing she thought I was that I could just pack up things and arrive here with one suitcase and make a life for myself ( like a lot of us have). She asked if I had always been like that, just having the guts to do things.
So... it got me thinking. I don't think of myself as a particularly "go getter" type of person, but also not a doormat for anyone. Then thought back to my childhood. On school holidays I actually asked my parents to send me on camps to Hobbiton on Hogsback (anyone else go there?). If I could not go there I went off to my Nan's house or to my cousins, for whatever reason I chose to be away from home. Then at 20 I went to Durban on holiday (having been born in East London), went back to EL and moved to Durban. And now I find myself in the UK.
So now I find myself pondering on this - what has made me this "wanderer" this person who feels she is not really settled. My parents were not the type to move around ,they never went further than Cape Town or Joburg on holiday, so where has this come from?
Anyone thought back to things they do that seem to stem from their childhood?
Maybe I just have too much time on my hands and think too much :p

What a GREAT day for South African Cricket, Sport and South Africa, well done!!!
As I sit here in the Northern Hemisphere at my desk all dark and cold with snow everywhere outside at -5°, and a million miles from home. Words once again would fail express my pride as I read about this great cricket match, and cricketing history. My hair tingled with pride and I was so excited I wanted to run outside and shout it out to the World.
Then suddenly I felt all sad and homesick, as I could just imagine the celebrations and pride that must be oozing everywhere in the country.
Almost as great as winning the rugby world cup? And I am NOT there to share this wonderful achievement with my mates and fellow saffers. :bigcry:
To us far and wide in this cyber world and so far home, may we share and cherish this special moment here, and in our hearts. At times like this I do question myself about my choices.
HOW DO YOU FEEL AT TIMES LIKE THIS? (Or have I just lost the plot tonight?) :duh:
So near and yet so far from our African roots.
Hugs Hagar

It is great for the game to see Italy snatch a draw against Wales
hopefully the Pasta Boys will go from strength to strength
and reason enough for them to have been invited in the 6 Nations too
