  Mandrake Linux
Posted by: picanin - 30-06-2004, 02:24 PM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - Replies (1)

I have just swapped over from using Red Hat to using Mandrake 10. What a doddle. It took me less than half an hour and three CD Roms. Out of the box I have internet connectivity, all of my hard drives are mounted and readable - inlcuding the USB one which Win2K barfed on, all my multimedia files are played (ask MS Media Player to play .ogg files for you). All in all a very quick and painless install. Included in the install is all the office software you will ever need, email and net software and tonnes of games.

And just to think I no longer have to live with the threat of some poxy little hacker exploiting yet another hole in the defences of MS Windows.

Billy Gates eat your heart out - time to go open source and find some real programmers to show you what a real OS is all about!

  Bill Bryson
Posted by: dudette - 29-06-2004, 10:37 PM - Forum: The Book Club - Replies (1)

I read a book by him about 2 years ago called Notes from a Big Country (about Australia) and found it hard work, so was not very motivated to try some of his other best-sellers.

On being awarded our much-deserved citizenship, someone gave me Bill Bryson's Notes from a small country (re the UK). I've only read up to about the first 50 pages and discovered a whole new side to his writing! He is so hilarious, and has caught the national psyche as well as newcomers reactions to it so accurately, he had me in tears of laughter last night!

I can't wait to get to bed again! Big Grin

  The Wash Cloth
Posted by: Jillibeans - 28-06-2004, 08:34 AM - Forum: Parenting and Children - Replies (2)

THE WASH CLOTH...

There is not a woman alive today that won't crack up over this one!

"I was due later in the week for an appointment with the gynaecologist.

Early one morning, I received a call from the doctor's office to tell me that I had been rescheduled for that morning at 9:30 a.m. I had only just packed everyone off to work and school and it was already around 8:45 am. The trip to his office took about 35 minutes, so I didn't have any time to spare.

As most women do, I like to take a little extra effort over hygiene when making such visits, but this time I wasn't going to be able to make the full effort. So, I rushed upstairs, threw off my pyjamas, wet the washcloth that was sitting next to the sink, and gave myself a quick wash in "that area" to make sure I was at least presentable. I threw the washcloth in the clothes basket, donned some clothes, hopped in the car and raced to my appointment.

I was in the waiting room for only a few minutes when I was called in. Knowing the procedure, as I'm sure you do, I hopped up on the table, looked over at the other side of the room and pretended that I was in Paris or some other place a million miles away.

I was a little surprised when the doctor said, "My, we have made an extra effort this morning, haven't we?" I didn't respond.

After the appointment, I heaved a sigh of relief and went home.

The rest of the day was normal...some shopping, cleaning, cooking, etc. After school when my six year old daughter was playing, she called out from the bathroom, "Mommy, where's my washcloth?" I told her to get another one from the cupboard. She replied, "No, I need the one that was here by the sink, it had all my glitter and sparkles in it."

Blush Can you imagine the doc!!! :haha:

  I have Plans For You
Posted by: Sue Johnson - 25-06-2004, 02:00 PM - Forum: Christian Faith Praise - No Replies

Jeremiah V29 11-

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, " plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, " declares the Lord, " and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you," declares the Lord, " and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile."

What an encouraging scripture...true today, as it was yesterday, as it will be tomorrow. He already has our life planned. The Lord knows all our tomorrows. Do not fear what lies ahead - remember...
He's already there!

He want's to prosper us, He want's to give us hope and a future...is that not what we want for our children too? This is the Father's heart speaking to His children...."call upon me and I will listen to you"....as parent's our children call upon us in their distress...do we not stop and listen...of course we do...our children in need....our children crying out....we forget the past, all the stuff they have done...in a moment it is gone, and in love we reach out and listen....just like the Father.

The Father's heart is open....His arms are open......He want's to bring us back from our captivity. He wants to draw us back from a place of exile..our own. He knows what path we should be on, the path he so lovingly created to prosper us, to give us hope, to give us a future.

As children we have our own ideas, we know better, we can do it ourselves.....how often does a young child demostrate all these characteristics? As we grow older, life is not so forgiving, we realise we are not an island and that we do not always know best. Sometimes we become so lost and so alone..there seem's no way out of exile.

How wonderful it is to say....I stuffed up BIG time....and know that there will be no condemnation, no pointing finger, no constant reminder of all those failures. How wonderful it is to know that a hand will be extended in love, a hand that will gently lift your spirit's, a hand that will walk with you as you pick up the pieces of a broken life, trashed dreams and a broken heart. A hand that will never let go because... " I know the plans I have for you "....................... that's His promise!!!

We have a great Dad!!

  Foods that fight flu!!
Posted by: Icecub - 25-06-2004, 07:17 AM - Forum: Your Health, Fitness and Wellbeing - No Replies

How does the old saying go? Starve a fever and feed a cold, or is it the other way around? Either way, the cold and flu season is upon us. And to effectively fight a cold or the flu (for which there is, curiously enough, still no cure), it's necessary to keep your body properly hydrated and provided with a sufficient amount of energy and nutrients.

Drink plenty of fluids to help thin mucous secretions. Try water, decaffeinated tea, fruit juice or broth-based soups. Slowly enjoying a steaming bowl of homemade chicken soup (Jewish Penicillin) is an old remedy that may provide some relief, mostly because it is packed with nutrients and fluids and the steam rising from the bowl eases congestion.

Hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. If you're so congested you can't sleep at night, try a hot toddy: make a cup of hot herbal tea, add one teaspoon of honey and 1 small shot of whiskey or bourbon and sip slowly while under the covers. Limit yourself to one as too much alcohol inflames those membranes and is counterproductive.

Avoid dairy products such as milk, cheese, ice cream and pudding because they tend to increase phlegm. But do have low-fat yoghurt as it contains valuable viable cultures which boost immunity in general.

Without further ado, we'll launch straight into the foods that fight flu, with thanks to our sister site health24.co.za who kept us on the scientific straight and narrow:

Do eat:

Bananas, rice, apples and toast (the BRAT diet) helps soothe an upset stomach and is especially helpful if you have dairrhoea

Green peppers, potatoes, strawberries, cabbage, pawpaw, broccoli, pineapple, citrus fruits and kiwifruit are loaded with vitamin C which, if taken at the first signs of a cold, may keep the cold from fully developing and may produce a faster recovery. Keep on eating them while you're ill, too.
Blueberries are high in natural aspirin which can help lower fever and help with aches and pains.
Fish, seafood, especially fresh and canned oysters, meat, poultry, eggs, cheese, milk, peanut butter and unprocessed grains and cereals are rich in zinc which may weaken the cold virus, minimising the duration and severity of cold and flu symptoms and promoting a strong immune system.
Garlic acts as a decongestant and has antioxidant properties that can destroy free-radicals.
Pumpkin, sweet potato, butternut, broccoli, spinach, yellow peaches (fresh and dried) are loaded with beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant that stimulates immune function and help our bodies fight diseases and infections.
Chilli peppers can open sinuses, and capsaicin, a substance in chilli peppers that acts as a mucokinetic agent, helps dispel mucus in the lungs.
Mustard and horseradish help break up mucus in air passages. Allyl isothiocyanate, a compound in horseradish, stimulates the endings of olfactory nerves and induces tears, and also helps to thin mucus.
Onion has phytochemicals purported to help the body clear bronchitis and other infections and boost the immune function.
Yoghurt and products that contain viable Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria cultures boost immune function.
Fatty fish (salmon and cod), and omega-3 enriched foods boosts immunity by stimulating the body to produce substances called cytokines, which are involved in fighting infections.
Tea such as black and green tea (not herbals) contain catechin, a phytochemical purported to have natural antibiotic and anti-diarrhoea effects.
With the first signs of flu, print this out and stick it on the fridge so you can eat yourself so much better in no time.
