My studio is full of paintings. One-fourth are portraits, one-fifth are animal paintings, one-tenth are landscapes and 45 are abstract.

How many paintings in all?

One-fourth 25%
One-fifth 20%
One-tenth 10% +45 gives you 100 :innocent:

Jangar, what you do is;

you know that the fractions that they give, plus the number of abstracts (45 in all) all add up to one whole, so you add One fourth, the one fifth,and the one tenth together.
This makes 9/20ths.
The remainder(11/20ths) is the abstracts, which they tell you is 45.

Then as the Master says ...

Kul jou hier, kul jou daar en Sie' daar ... 100 in all Big Grin

I think I get it now...

1/4 + 1/5 + 1/10 = 11/20 so thus the 45 = 9/20...

Therefore 45/x = 9/20
9x = 900 and thus x = 100 Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Start with the number of letters in the word for the people honored by a February holiday that honors our Chief, add the number of letters in the avenue named in the song “Easter Parade,” then subtract the number of letters in the word that represents the night of witches and goblins.

What number do you get?

The only Feb holiday I can think of that honours a 'Chief' is Baden-Powell's day. (11) +5 - 9 (Halloween) = 7

Close but no cigar Smile

There is another Feb holiday across the big pond.

I seem to recall that the holiday in question has been mentioned before in this forum...

If you're talking about Presidents Day, (which, BTW, is the 3rd Monday in February), then my sum is
9+5-9 = 5
