Labour meets AMCU, mining companies - Newsroom - 24-01-2014 The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has agreed to allow government to mediate talks between the union and mining companies. Amcu and platinum mining companies will today hold a meeting with Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant at the CCMA offices to discuss the union's demands. This follows an earlier proposal by Oliphant to meet both the union and the employer body in a bid to try avert the strike. However, the strike got underway yesterday, with the union demanding a R12 500 entry level salary per month. AMCU also indicated to Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe that they would like to get a new mandate from their members authorising them to take part in the talks. Speaking on the side lines of the NEDLAC’s annual Labour Council on Tuesday, Oliphant said: “As we have always indicated, the department is on hand whenever possible to play a mediating role and it is our fervent hope that all the interested parties will seize this opportunity with open hands. “Our economy is stressed enough already and another strike in the mining industry would have dire consequences,†said the minister. - SAnews.gov.za |
