Govt committed to bringing stability in mining - Newsroom - 11-02-2013

Johannesburg – Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu says government is committed to bringing about stability and addressing the challenges faced by the mining industry.

“I am confident that we are able to address these challenges and ensure that South Africa continues to be a place for investors,” said the minister, adding that her department will continue to engage all stakeholders.

“We need to engage and ensure that we find an ever-lasting solution,” she said at a New Age Breakfast Briefing in Johannesburg on Monday.

Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) earlier this year announced that it was considering retrenching 14 000 workers, but has since put this on hold. Last year’s Marikana tragedy and the industrial action which has followed also left the industry uncertain.

The minister said she was confident a solution to the Amplats issue would be found.

Shabangu said her department would continue to play a leading role in regulating the mining industry. “We need to make sure that there is compliance with the Mining Act and that there is success in the industry,” she said.

Last week, Shabangu told delegates attending the Mining Indaba in Cape Town that government was committed to creating a thriving and successful mining industry.

“I would like to affirm that our government is fully conscious of the reality that mineral development cannot happen unless capital is invested by the private sector,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za
