Vines
#1
As part of my grand plan for the currently blank canvas I have at home, I'm considering putting in a pergola and growing sweet vines on it. I am thinking of Vitis 'Brant', V. 'Fragola' or V. 'Purpurea' Yes I have been busy with my new RHS books!

Anyone able to recommend a good stockist with a website that I can have a look at?

Also has anyone experience of growing vines in the UK? For example, am I taking on a nightmare?

Many thanks
Gavin

Cultivars are often less vigorous than the parent plant, so go for anything with a x between the names...

Other than that, decide if you want evergreen or deciduous. My personal favourite climber remains the Wisteria - it grows rapidly, produces amazingly beautiful flowers with a divine scent, and you can twist the vines into shapes to cut for decoration when it dies down in the winter.

Any of the Clematis family should do well, and there are some very showy types available now. If the site is very sunny, you can evey attempt a grapevine along with something else. Granadilla has been known to thrive in this climate as well.

Cheers for this BB

I am also considering clematis as by using different cultivars we can get flowers from early to late summer. I found a firm called Thompson and Morgan that seem to be a specialist, they even do videos on how to successfully cultivate clematis.

I like the idea of Granadilla and vines together though.

Hey! Howzit yourself! When are we doing beer next?

Thanks for this advice, the site you recommended looks really good, to ta for that.

I also found a site called http://www.crocus.co.uk that has loads of hints and tips, plus a neat way of getting Alan Titchmarsh to recommend plants where lo and behold, there is a link to them in their catalogue! How helpful Wink

OOOOHHHHHH!!!! Pombok....go for the clematis...they are so beautiful, and the mix of colours are incredible.
I managed to grow some in Cape Town for a few years.....well until a new puppy thought they would be fun to attack and distroyed them all in one day.... I wish I could find them again in Cape Town.

Another great creeper is Jasmin especially if you combine it with something else.

PomBok, are you referring to grape vines rather than creepers?

( Thinks: knowing PB, it must be Grape Vines, can't imagine him making a brew out of flowers! Mind you on second thoughts ...) Big Grin

Actually, my Elderflower Surprise* was quite a hit

* The surprise is that it's not wine at all, but 90% vodka. Try that in a half-pint rouge goblet without a mixer :haha:
