Hi folks - just a quick update.

When I went in yesterday morning to visit Wendy informed me that the Night Shift had promised her pain relief and she never got it dso suffered all night. So off goes Oom Rob ready to blow anyone and everyone out of the water but by the time I got to the Staff Nurse I was so cool and calm that I informed her what had transpired and that I would appreciate it if I could talk to her Specialist. I must have got it right, because within fifteen minutes he was at her bedside. Thankfully he did not attempt to b******t me or Wendy's partner and told us that he honestly did not know what was causing Wendy's problem and that she was not coming home until he got to the bottom of it, and as for the Night Shift Staff he would deal with that.

Next week Wendy is going to be taken to the Pain Management Unit for them to run more tests - the Specialist was brutally honest and said that he did not want to open Wendy up to have a look because it would be a very dangerous thing to do considering her previous medical history. We appreciated his honesty.

Wendy was in tears because this weekend is her stepson's birthday - on hearing this the Specialist has allowed her home for the weekend on the understanding that the takes it easy, takes her medication and does not travel about, but she has to be back on the Ward tomorrow evening.

As they had already bought tickets for the Scunthorpe United vs Colchester United match today (the birthday boy was born in Colchester and supports Colchester United), Rob is going to take the boys and Robin, who finishes work at 1 is going with them to use Wendy's ticket, whilst we will go up and spend the afternoon with her.

I despair!!

When Ruth and I went into visit this morning she was ready for coming home - she is no better than when she went in and the pain is just as bad. Ruth went off to find the Specialist and he told her that he "knows there is something wrong but I cannot find it" - so he is sending Wendy home with anti-depressents!! When Ruth tried to ask him a few questions he walked away - I am in despair as my daughter is in pain and nobody appears interested.

I wonder what he would do if she were his own daughter...?

We have a friend who was in a great deal of discomfort for a long time after an awkward birth... They eventually discovered a needle had been left inside her - impossible as that may seem to use simple laymen...It was not obvious from the initial x-ray but a later one from another angle revealed it ad:

The Rob I know will not take this lying down, what can the next step be, a letter to your MP? I can only imagine the agony as a parent having to watch this unfold. If there is anything we can do to help, i.e. finding out what avenues to explore etc. then please let us know.

Dear Oom Rob,

I just cannot understand that this is happening in today's day and age of 2006! It is just totally unacceptable that Wendy is in pain and they want to discharge her home....it is your right as a NHS patient to demand a second opinion, if you feel the consultant in charge of her care do not do enough to try and get to the bottom of this. He need to refer her to a colleauge or even another hospital with more specialist care if needed.

Wendy can also ask to be reviewed by the 'painteam' (this is normally led by a consultant anaesthetist and a team that specialise in pain management) and be on appropiate painkillers.
As a member of the profession it is just hard and frustrating when reading things like this :wall:

Thank you for all your words of advice and your kindness. Obviously a person like me will not take this lying down, but to have 'reacted' yesterday would have been wrong, because I may have said something that I would have later regretted.

Having had the chance to look at things as they stand, I now know my course of action and will be discussing it with my daughter and her partner later today.

Several years ago on Robin's very first day at High School he was tripped and broke his ankle. Everything was going well until we took him for his routine check-up when a stupid young House Doctor stated that he did not have a broken ankle and sent him home without the plaster. I do not think the Chief Executive knew what hit him because within 24 hours he had received a solicitors letter, a phone call from my MP and several other prominent people - that Robin was recalled to the hospital, new x-rays taken that clearly showed the ankle was still broken. Eventually Ruth and I decided not to sue, and accepted their apologies - so I think that if my daughter allows, I am going to go down similar lines with this case.

To be honest I detest doing this, as in many other matters the hospital has done us proud, but I am not prepared to stand by and see my daughter suffer.

I know you will take this further and as OLL says, it is your right to demand a second opinion..
Problem is just that all the consultants mainly do private work and only a few hours per week for the NHS
