Other than that, decide if you want evergreen or deciduous. My personal favourite climber remains the Wisteria - it grows rapidly, produces amazingly beautiful flowers with a divine scent, and you can twist the vines into shapes to cut for decoration when it dies down in the winter.

Any of the Clematis family should do well, and there are some very showy types available now. If the site is very sunny, you can evey attempt a grapevine along with something else. Granadilla has been known to thrive in this climate as well.

I am also considering clematis as by using different cultivars we can get flowers from early to late summer. I found a firm called Thompson and Morgan that seem to be a specialist, they even do videos on how to successfully cultivate clematis.

I like the idea of Granadilla and vines together though.
