Thats my point, if you want to go in season, when everyone else goes, then it costs so much more.
In addition, you need spending money whilst there, and £1000 for 12 days is not unrealistic if you take the cost of eating out now and then, fun activities i.e. hiring a pedalo or canoe, icecreams for the family, hiring a car for the day or week, transport to and from the airport etc. etc. It is amazing how quickly it all adds up.
(as an aside, we used http://www.vacansoleil.co.uk for our canvas holiday this year. They don't have couriers on site and are much cheaper. found their service to be pretty good)
