Yes , that's how it's done here - and I take my hat off , to the connoisseurs , the traditions and the expertise , as can be observed all around me , daily !

Me , I haven't got to anywhere near those culture-levels , so :
I stick to wine mostly , usually a Bordeaux ( Medoc , Blaye or better ) , a safe bet with most of the grub I like ( young beef , lamb , loadsa veggies ) ...
