The reason SA took much longer to go into recession was because of some farsighted financial services regulation that meant SA was not as affected as other countries. Naturally because of the fact that the rest of the world was in recession, this meant that SA would also eventually be dragged into it as well.
The world cup is also certainly helping it, with all of the investment going into the restructuring yes, but it was really the legislation that was their greatest saviour.

Your experiences with the service from MTN et all is certainly harrowing and frustrating and a typical story that is often heard in SA, but you do also get some good service over there. I have my banking account with ABSA and my bond with Nedbank and I have to date, always received good service from them.
Mind you, living in the UK means regularly phoning a comanies helpline and getting through to an Indian call centre which virtually always involves hours of waiting and frustration, so bad service happens over here all too frequently as well, so I guess you get used to it. I imagine you dont have that experience with the German efficiency.
