The first multi-racial big game at Hartlyvale if I remember correctly was Hellenic against Keizer Chiefs. Besides the teams it was also the first time the spectator's were also mixed.
Ian Towers also looked after Herzlia at school level, must have been 1979 we played against them. I have never been to a national soccer match since the demise of Cape Town City. Even the breaking down of Green Point Stadium was a sad affair as a City supporter. Those days in the crowd there were various characters, you knew they were there amongst 18 000 or whatever the crowd was for a Friday night at Hartlyvale. The guy with a bell sounded like that bell came from the Granger stand area. Now it's just one rediculous racket so in a way good that never happened at our beloved Hartlyvale at a City home game.
Friday night's were special, it was the end of the week, a meeting place and wonderfull start to the weekend, arriving home in time to still catch the last 10 or so songs of Gresham's Top 20 on Springbok Radio which ended at midnight.
