I have never had any problems with the NHS at all. The majority of the doctors who are not based in hospitals are actually self employed. I am fortunate to have a fantastic female doctor who takes time to explain things properly and she also listens. I have never had to wait more than 24 hours for a non emergency, and when I have been really ill, i have got an appointment within a few hours of phoning the surgery.
