I had 2 very different experiences with my kids. With the girls I was in labour (on and off, mostly on) for a week, and as they were early (32 weeks) they gave me all sorts to delay the labour. By the time my waters finally broke a week after my first pains, I was a gibbering wreck, I was so tired. So I was given an epidural, and they were born just 1 hour after my waters broke. With my boy (now nearly 11 months old) it was soooo different. My waters broke at 39 weeks, and I was able to have a water birth. It was incredibly painful, but the midwives left me to it (as per my request) I had gas and air which helped immensely, and I know I begged for an epidural, but I was too far gone, so I had to go without. 6 Hours after my waters broke, I delivered my own son. I had NO intervention, and despite the pain, it was by far the better of the 2 deliveries... It was quite honestly the most incredible, moving experience of my life.
It is going to hurt like mad, but once the baby is delivered, it literally all fades away (I think it's a safety mechanism - if we all remembered the pain we'd never do it again!! :yikes: ) and you will have a perfect, tiny little thing that you will adore more than you ever thought. It will be worth it.
Don't try and be a hero though, if you're not coping, take whatever they can give you. If you're tired and too stressed, it will affect the baby too...
