Cats & Dogs.

I have a cat but I would now like to get a dog & I'm wondering what kind of dog will get along with a cat but will also be a good guard dog as well.
I will also ask the SPCA & check on the net but I thought I would ask if anyone here has any suggestions/advice about it too.

What do you expect from a "guard dog"? I had Malteses for years, they got on well with my cats & were fantastic burglar alarms!

As a broad general rule, none of the terriers will get on with cats, though I do believe if you buy the dog young enough and raise them with the cat(s) they should get on fine.

In my experience, the bigger the dog, the soppier they are around cats (go figure).

I am about to get two kittens myself soon - am looking forward to this. In preparation for this event our tenants terrier has been exiled to the backyard (with a kennel and all provided).
