As early as the fourth century A.D., wodden horses were used to train soldiers how to mount and dismount quickly. The vaulting horse for gymnastic purposes was first used in Berlin; both leather and wodden versions existed. Until the early 19th century, many vaulting horses had a head and a tail.

Their fur is made up of clear, hollow hairs. In addition to the two-to-four inch layer of blubber under their skin to help keep them warm, the hairs trap heat like a solar collector. The bear's entire body is furred, including the bottom of its paws.
