The Game can be traced to 16th-century Italy, where it was called Io giuoco del Lotto d'Italia, "the game of the Italian (National) Lottery". When it finally migrated to the United States in 1929, it was played at country fairs. A New York toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe renamed it bingo after he overheard someone accidentally yell "bingo" instead of "beano" (beans were used as card markers).
Etiquette dictates that it is improper to use the term congratulations when greeting a bride.
