The original statue was made with iron girders overlaid with a copper sheath. From 1984 until 1986, American and French craftsmen renovated Lady Liberty. The Americans replaced the old flame with a gold-plated copper frame, which is lit by reflection, as well as making other repairs and renovations. Incidentally, the structural engineer for the original project was Alexandre_Gustave Eiffel, a man with some experience in building large projects.
