Chocolate contains theobromine, which, in sufficient quantaties, is toxic to dogs. This is a xanthine compound in the family of caffeine. Xanthines affect the nervous system, cardiovascular system, and peripheral nerves. They have diuretic effect, as well. The good news is that it takes a fairly large amount of theobromine to cause a toxic reaction.
