German Deutsche Welle newspaper reports that a 2006 World Cup quarter-final match involving Brazil, five-time world champions, and Ghana was rigged by an Asian betting group.

Der Spiegel magazine reported that, according to the research of Canadian journalist Declan Hill, the Asian betting group intended for Ghana to lose the quarter-final match by a minimum of two goals. Brazil won 3-0.

According to Der Spiegel, a former Ghana international had acted as the middleman between Ghana's players and the head of a betting syndicate in Bangkok.

The German publication said its own research had also shown two matches in Germany which are suspicious of fixing.

Suspicion arose when a Malaysian who placed EUR 2.8 million with Asian bookmakers on Kaiserslautern vs Hanover match on 26 Nov 2005 won EUR 2.2 million. The man also placed almost EUR 4 million on Karlsruhe vs Sportfreunde match on Aug. 7, 2005 when Karlsruhe won the game 2-0.

The German Football Federation (DFB) and German Football League (DFL) said in a joint statement they will conduct an investigation on the latest match fixing allegations.
