Australia's star spinner Shane Warne has announced he will retire from international cricket after the Ashes.

Warne, 37, is one wicket away from becoming the first bowler in Test history to claim 700 wickets, with the fourth Test starting on 26 December.

"I'd like to go out on top. I want to go out on my terms, I'd like to think I've earned that right," Warne said.

He said he would complete the final two years of his contract with county side Hampshire but will quit state cricket.

  Soda Water pastry
Posted by: Cheffie - 21-12-2006, 11:29 AM - Forum: Recipes - No Replies

For use in savoury or sweet pies. It has the 'body' of Shortcrust pastry, the texture and lightness of Puff pastry.
It's an old family recipe given to me years ago (by Joan S) and apparently dates back to the early 1900's in South Africa.

Granted it is a mission to make.. but the results are undoubtedly superior

Joan's Soda Water Pastry

Ingredients:

4 Cups Plain flour
1 Tsp Cream of Tartar
1 pinch Salt
1 200ml Tin of Soda water
1lb (+- 450g) Frozen Margerine

Method:

Working over an ice bath, sieve the flour, cream of tartar and salt.
Grate the margerine into the mixture and mix in with a wooden spoon. Add soda water and mix in well. Do not overwork the pastry.

Leave to relax in the fridge for a minimum of 12 hours.

One for the Chef re: Mince pies
Posted by: Ade - 21-12-2006, 09:10 AM - Forum: Food Matters - No Replies

Merry Christmas on and all... :xmasprep:

I have this problem every time I make mince pies with puff pastry, the lid expands and lifts up (like the hatch on a tank), and the base expands and pushes all the filling out.

They still taste yummy so it hasn't put me off, but how do you make decent mince pies with puff pastry

Answers on a postcard please....
