Running - The Mental Torture |

I have just read through the Duck/mcamp Challenge thread, and noted with horror that the Duck managed to get in a 2 hour run recently.
My question is, how is it possible (if you can achieve this milestone physically) to endure mentally for this length of time.
Personally, I can do up to an hour on my feet, however it is sheer mental agony getting this far. The monotony is killing. What can one do to keep the mind occupied for this long? ... Look at trees ...? ... Avoid getting hit by cars ...? ... Watch telly (treadmill running) ...? ... Mp3 player ...?
I find after a while that I have to play the numbers game to keep my mind occupied - i.e. how many steps can I run in a minute? How many minutes can I sprint for? etc ...
Very seldom do I reach a point where I can zone-out and just put one foot in front of the other for an indefinite period of time.
Help!

The Government would look at buying up commercially available agricultural land in a bid to speed up land reform, Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana said yesterday.
She was speaking after the presidential working group met on agriculture in Pretoria.
Farmers' unions, cabinet ministers and the private sector held discussions with President Thabo Mbeki, looking at issues such as bio-fuel development, regional trade, agri-BEE, and land reform.
Xingwana said there was consensus over the need to speed up land reform. One of the ways this would be done would be to buy up available agricultural property.
"Agri-SA will identify land that is available. We'll be using various programmes to acquire this land as quickly as possible," she said.
"There is land out there. More than 4% of agricultural land (is) traded annually," Agri-SA president Lourie Bosman said. He said the union would make its data base available to the government.
Xingwana said the government would also look at land being made available by the private sector and at making available some state-owned land. She said the focus would be on training farmers to use the land in a sustainable way. - Sa

By Staff Reporter
Johan Jacobs had today aimed to become the fastest man on earth. Instead he was yesterday killed in a 500km/h crash in a dragster powered by a jet engine.
The South African landspeed record holder and former fighter pilot died at Verneukpan, near Upington, when his jet car, Edge, went out of control and flipped during a practice run for todayÂ’s attempt to break the 24-second world record for the standing mile (1.64km).
After the tragedy, plans were cancelled to host a large group of motoring journalists in a desert tent camp. They had been invited to watch the attempt to break the record.
It is understood the crash happened when the jet-propelled car, which was capable of speeds of more than 500km/h, suddenly went out of control.
Full medical back-up was on standby but the medics were unable to save Jacobs.
On earlier runs, the jet dragster had proven its ability to complete a one-kilometre run from a standing start in a mere 9.4 seconds at a peak speed of around 509km/h.
Jacobs, who was managing director of GautengÂ’s Jet Stream Drag Racing Promotions, set the South African top-speed and standing-start kilometre records, as well as the fastest quarter-mile (400m).
A spokesman for the organisers said that a statement would be issued later today and that no further details were available.
Verneukpan is a large salt pan in the Kalahari, 150km south of Upington, and has been used to set numerous land speed records, including an unsuccessful attempt by Sir Donald Campbell early last century.
The specially built Castrol Edge Showdown Jet Dragster slashed land speed and acceleration records and became a popular feature attraction at venues across the country, including challenging an L-39 Albatross (ZU-TEE) jet fighter piloted by top aerobatic and commercial pilot Pierre Gouws, at the Jozi airshow in Mpumalanga last month.
“We need to continuously evolve the Castrol Edge Showdown concept and provide air show crowds with exciting new acts.
“Hence the introduction of the jet fighter to the Castrol Edge team,†said Jacobs last month.
The result was an amazing spectacle and a phenomenal, power-packed crowd-pleaser. This display was the first of its type in South Africa, producing the ultimate showdown of speed and power as the Castrol Edge Jet Team raced down the Rand Airport runway.
The airborne jet fighter had the advantage of flying past the starting point at around 200km/h before accelerating towards the quarter-mile and one-kilometre markers.
As the plane passed overhead, Jacobs ignited the afterburner on the Jet Dragster, unleashing 11 000 pounds of thrust and thundering towards the finishing point at more than 500km/h.
