Karen Zoid @ Zulus in Leytonstone
Posted by: picanin - 03-09-2004, 08:52 PM - Forum: Your Music - Replies (4)

Last night I got to see my favourite female South African artiste. Man what a great time!

Karen kicked off with "Afrikaaners is Pleserig," one of my favourite tracks and an excellent way to start the evening. From there it was a whirlwind tour through her two albums with songs like Katrina, Yuppie Scum, Oh My Love and others. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and it was well worth the effort of getting from civilisation to deepest, darkest Leytonstone.

I do however have one comment regarding the evening. Prior to Karen coming on stage the resident DJ was spinning the discs. The sort of music he was playing ranged from Buggles to Bob Marley with even some ABBA in between. Why I want to know does Zulus not play at least some SA music? There are so much good SA music, surely places like Zulu's can slip the odd bit of SA music in? Even Man on The Moon would have been appreciated! Far too many Saffershave the silly mindset of local is automatically k4k. Rubbish! there is some brilliant music out there being performed by some excellent performers. Last nights gig proved that!

People instead of buying Lady Smith Black Mambazo CD's that you only trot out when the neighbours come for tea, go listen to some of the recent SA music and you will probalby be very pleasantly suprised!

  Rooibos Tea
Posted by: nataliiie - 03-09-2004, 08:36 PM - Forum: Your Health, Fitness and Wellbeing - Replies (11)

We all know the benefits of Rooibos tea. However, I'm interested to find out if it is high in Tannin.

A nutritionist recommended teas that are low (or void) of tannin, i.e. fruit and herbal teas. Does Rooibos fall into this category?

THE OBSERVATORY -----
by Max Lucado

A few mornings back I was jogging through my neighborhood, and even I
could not miss the significance of that day. It was the first day of
school.

It was no surprise to me, then, to see a pretty little girl step out of
her house wearing new clothes and a backpack. “Have a great first day
of school,” I greeted as I jogged past.

She stopped and looked at me as if I'd pulled a rabbit out of a hat.
“How did you know?!”

She was stunned. Somehow I had miraculously discerned why she was up so
early and where she was going. And she was impressed.

“Oh, I just know those kind of things,” I shouted back to her. (No need
to burst her bubble.)

You, on the other hand, are not so easily impressed. You understand the
difference between a child and a grownup. Take the difference between
the girl and me, amplify it a million times over, and we begin to see
the contrast between us and our Father.

We ask for grace, only to find forgiveness already offered. (How did
you know I would sin?)

We ask for food, only to find provision already made. (How did you know
I would be hungry?)

We ask for guidance, only to find answers in God's ancient story. (How
did you know what I would ask?)

God dwells in a different realm. “The foolishness of God is higher than
human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength”
(1 Cor. 1:25). He occupies another dimension. “My thoughts are not like
your thoughts. Your ways are not like my ways. Just as the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts higher than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8-9).

  Unusual Insects
Posted by: Bushbaby - 03-09-2004, 08:51 AM - Forum: Fauna - Replies (1)

Has anyone else seen unusual insects/spiders about this year?

The other night I found a moth in my kitchen that had a protrusions either side of the head that together were as wide as the moth was long (was one of those very thin types). In effect, it had a head shaped like a hammerhead shark. Most unusual and I have never seen anything like it.

Spiderwise we are also seeing many more different types this year, and much larger specimens of the regular types as well.

  Summers End

Seeing as the season is now winding down (notice the chill in the air?) it seems like a good time to ask everyone how their gardening year worked out - did things go according to plan this year?

What successes and what failures can you report?

What are you planning for next year?

From my side the move to a new house at the beginning of May put paid to my gardening plans for the year - I gave my tomato plants away, and my chilli and eggplants are still sitting in pots - they did not flower this year (hardly surprising as it was so overcast) so will bring them in for the winter and hope for better luck next year.

The herb garden did well - most of these plants will overwinter indoors or on the patio but I lost my battle to keep the basils from flowering so all three varieties will have to be replanted next season.

On the fruit front the apple tree we inherited has produced an excellent crop of cooking apples, and by the look of it, we will have a bumper crop of blackberries as well.

Plans for the winter are to cut back the hedge on the back fence and remove the apple tree growing there and prepare that space as a vegetable garden. The other apple tree will be pruned back hard to encourage a bigger crop next year. New additions to the backyard will include blackcurrant bushes and a raspberry cane or two.

In the front garden we will go for herbs and flowers and a few architectural plants such as cardoon and artichoke. Am putting down a lot of bulbs for the spring and summer and have a few flower boxes to prepare for winter flowering plants. One side of the drive has a lot of trees and shrubs - these will be pruned back and/or removed and a better screen will be planted with amaranth (advantage being the leaves are edible).
