  New books
Posted by: Pampered - 20-05-2004, 12:13 PM - Forum: The Book Club - Replies (8)

Hubby's gonna kill me.....just come back from Waterstones, where I have bought 5 new books (this makes about 20 odd in the last 2 months or so.....:o )

this is what I got:

A Hat Full of Sky - Terry Pratchett (the book I have decided to read from Bushbaby's suggestions for June)
Shopaholic (how apt!) Ties the Know - Sophie Kinseall
Rachel's Holiday - Marian Keyes (been dying to get this book for ages!)
Frankie and Stankie - Barbara Trapido (I'll do a brief synopsis - sounds brilliant!)
The Reading Group - Elizabeth Noble

A Synopsis on Frankie and Stankie, by Barbara Trapido:

This is the story of Dinah, growing up in South Africa in the 1950s and 1960s. Living with liberal parents, she experiences apartheid with growing disgust, but nevertheless does not allow it to interfere with the importance of a first boyfriend, doing well in exams and finding best friends.

Frankie and Stankie is a marvellous book. Trapido's trademark light touch is wonderfully on display as characters, both average and extraordinary are brought to life beautifully. But underlying her usual vignettes is the history of South Africa. For those who know little about the country this is a fantastic introduction to exactly what the Boer War was, to the way in which the British and Afrikaans battled for supremacy, and the attempts to undermine the regime of apartheid

Anyone read her books? Have just read 2, and am on the 3rd. She is great!! Lovely lighthearted chick-lit. I am hooked - planning on getting the other books soon.

The "Shopahloic" series is brilliant! Big Grin

  Need a hobby
Posted by: Spacegirl - 19-05-2004, 01:32 PM - Forum: Your Hobbies, Flora and Fauna - Replies (11)

I need a hobby that is interesting and challenging but there is so much on offer I am suffering from information overload.

My lifestyle is such that I spend a large amount of my life at work or traveling to and from work. I also have to consider my childrens needs so I ideally have about 5 hours a week mostly on weekends when I can do something other than housework.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I enjoy most things but I no longer drink or smoke so anything where that is expected is a no no. I thought about ballroom dancing or wood carving - but so far I am really stuck!

I need to find a hobby soon as I am going out of my mind with the fact that my life is increadibly dull.

thanks for reading.

  An ode to Mommies!!

From that very first moment of conception, your life changes for the better!!

You start to feel different within yourself, you feel somewhat tired but euphoric!! Strange to describe but you ladies will know who have had babies...then going to either buy a kit or see the doctor to confirm your pregnancy..then taking vitamins, eating healthily, watching yourself slowly change, either you get zits or your skin blooms, your hair falls out or either it is lustier than ever, you either look blooming marvellous or just plain shi1te!!

Falling asleep over the dinner table was not unusual for me, even while i had guests, the tiredness was exhausting to say the least but it only lasted for 3
months....

Then it is that sudden flutter of butterflies in your tummy, how i remember that, we went down to Scottburgh to the townhouse and i was laying in the lounge and felt strange, i put my hand to my tummy and it happened again, as if baby knew his Mommy was there....i was in 7th heaven that whole weekend, and baby did not stop kicking - he seemed to want me to know he was alive and going great guns....

Then it was collecting baby clothes, getting the nursery ready, putting in my notice at work, and sitting if not living in the swimming pool, going to ante-natal classes, meeting a whole lot of new Mommy's, exciting times!!

Towards the end, boy, did i curse!! Geez, the amount of times i had to get up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet, the F words were mentioned alot.......

But when he came, i was happy, glad, bursting with pride, okay i was lucky i had two hours labour!! But i missed him alot in my tummy, i felt suddenly emptier, i mourned his loss in my tummy...i missed the kicking and the heartburn....and now he is 11.....Amazing to believe i bore him for 9 months and gave birth to this fascinating child...

How i love being a Mother!!

  renting a canal boat?
Posted by: Spacegirl - 18-05-2004, 12:37 PM - Forum: Travel and Immigration - Replies (14)

I am keen to take my son's on holiday and rent a canal boat in the UK, I would like to hear from anyone who has done this and their experiences. Bearing in mind that I will be on my own with my son's does this pose any safety issue or strength issue in terms of stearing these things?

I have looked at a few websites and it does appear to be quite expensive for a week's trip in July or August so anyone who can suggest a reasonable charter please do let me know.

I recall on VS that one of our memebers (rick I think) owned one of these boats, am I mistaken or can anyone refresh my memory.

OK, back to work for me

Lovely day but some of us gotta work!
