Gymnasium is derived from the Greek word gymnos, meaning "naked". Women weren't allowed to participate or to watch any of the events, and there were no team competitions. For one event no longer in existence, the hoplite race, naked athletes wore helmets and carried equipment weighing as much as 60 pounds.
