It was formed to recognize the social and economic achievements of American workers. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in September 1882 in New York City. The holiday spread to other industrial centers over the next few years, and in June 1894 Congress passed an act recognizing Labor Day as a legal holiday.
Tickets to the Woodstock festival were $24 at the gate.
