Sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle...
(I hate to preach, but everyone knows that they should back up their data, but still don't...what can I say!
I haven't had a lot of experience with laptop hard disks but they're pretty similar to desktop counterparts.
If you can hear the disk spinning you probably have a decent chance of data retrieval.
There are companies that provide data recovery services, but I dunno how much it costs and their success rates.
I would try plugging in the disk as a secondary disk on another pc and see if you can read it.
look at some companies on the net, like http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/ or have a look into Spinrite from http://www.grc.com, or there are many others...
(pc world would come at the bottom of the list!)
