Maggot therapy has been around since the early 19th century. During the Napoleonic wars, doctors found soldiers healed better when their wounds were infested with maggots. The treatment became popular, then fell out of favour as advances in antibiotics and modern surgery took over. However, some very reputable doctors still use these parasites to clean out dead tissue from bedsores, gangreen, leg ulcers, and stubborn infections.
