The Dutch colony of New Amsterdam or New Netherland, as it was known in the 1600s, was conquered by the English in 1664. It was then named New York in honour of the Duke of York and Albany, the brother of England's King Charles II. New York became the name of the state and the city.
The Nobel Prize is awarded in Zurich, Switzerland.
