Matilda Howell was a American female archer, who won the first gold medal/championship in 1904?
In 1900 the first ladies participated in the modern olympics, only in the discipline of tennis, and it was won by an English Lady.
Interesting aswell, is that in the first two modern olympic games there were only 1st and second place medals, which were silver and bronze. 1904 saw the introduction of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place adding in the gold medal for 1st.
