New lease on life for Ennerdale youth
#1
Johannesburg - Thirty young people from Ennerdale doing a three-month boiler making course at Making a Difference (MAD) School of Welding will form part of 300 graduates to be placed within various Gauteng departments for experiential learning.

This after Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane visited the area on Tuesday and committed to absorb the 30 students to gain work experience in Gauteng’s four tertiary hospitals.

“Part of what we need in government is people with boiler-making skills, especially in our hospitals. We are also doing this as part of creating jobs for our young people,” said Mokonyane.

Mokonyane visited Ennerdale as part of her campaign to find solutions in dealing with the drug abuse scourge in the province, according to the Gauteng Provincial Government.

She also visited the family of a 20-year-old woman who was murdered last week in the area. After meeting with the family, Mokonyane addressed the community members who had gathered outside the family home, saying the government was going to improve communication between the family and the police.

“The South African Police Service will from now on co-operate with the family. The fact that the suspect has been given bail does not mean she is off the hook,” said the Premier, adding that the case has been escalated to a higher level.

She also apologised to the family for their unhappiness towards the police’s handling of the case.

The suspect will appear in court on 28 June 2013.

In addition, Mokonyane said government wanted to partner with communities in the fight against drugs and crime - including women and children abuse.

“The battle against drugs is a battle for everyone. Let us continue to give support to one another. Let us fight our common enemy which is drugs,” she said. – SAnews.gov.za
