Not common language, I know, but I'm sure it will make sense to someone!

Megawon took six hours to fly to Pluto, a spot in Tierra del Fuego, at 2,000 miles per hour. She hit a head wind on the way back and could make only 1,000 miles per hour.

What was her average airspeed?

:mmm: this sounds very familiar ...

6 hours at 2000 mph here,
and 1000mph back would make it 12 hours at that speed, thereby taking 18 hours in all.
Still ...

While I'm tempted to just add the two speeds together and divide by two, I think its a little more complicated than that.

Ok, average airspeed is distance over time
so the distance travelled is (2000.6 +1000.12) =30000 miles

Now average speed is distance/time = 30000/18 = 1666.66mph.

I think... Smile

Let's see if I can figure it out...

6 hours at 2 000 mph = 12 000 miles the reurn trip also 12 000 miles was at a speed of 1 000 mph must have taken 12 hours so total flying time is 18 hours, distance was 24 000 miles. thus avergare speed is 24 000 miles / 18 hours which gives me 1 333 mph.

Will check the answer after I get back from supper. Smile

This formular also works for the:

Will walked three miles in one hour. He had to slow down to two miles per hour. He returns at two miles per hour.

What was his average speed?
