Police groups everywhere objected to the theme of the song, in which a psycopath wants revenge on a bad cop. The controversy grew after the L.A. riots, with members of congress, Oliver North, Dan Quayle, and George Bush condemning the tune. Ice-T voluntarily withdrew the song after threats of violence were made against several Warner Brothers executives.

He adopted his professional name because of his raspy voice and wild on-air antics. He was the operator and main on-air personailty of XERF, broadcasting from Mexico on a transmitter so powerful he could be heard all over the continent and it is said he could be heard in Russia. The film
American Graffiti was about him.

It was the first double album ever and possibly also the first concept album. It cost $21 000 to produce which was considered an outrageous amount then. Producer Tom Wilson linked the songs with unusual sound effects at Zappa's suggestion.
