It was originally titled "Ida May". A producer at Chess Records felt that "Ida May" sounded like a country song, and suggested that Baerry change the title and give the song more of aa rock and roll feel. Disc jockey Alan Freed re-wrote the lyrics and was rewarded with a writer's credit on the tune.
