Sam Phillips felt that Carl Perkins had a better shot at stardom than Elvis Presley. In 1956, while Perkins was enjoying success with his recording of "Blue Suede Shoes", he drove to New York City to appear on the "Perry Como Show" and "The Ed Sullivan Show" to promote the record on network television. Along the way he had a car accident and Elvis covered "Blue Suede Shoes" and turned it into a huge hit while Carl recuperated from four broken ribs and three breaks in in the right shoulder. The accident slowed Carl's momentum, while Elvis quickly grabbed the spotlight.
