The author is a man who heard the story somewhere and decided to write the book which is a work of fiction.
It has some elements of truth, but is definitely not an autobiography.

Though written as a memoir from the perspective of a one-time geisha, the novel was actually written by Arthur Golden, a white American male born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, who studied Japanese art at Harvard and Japanese history at Coumbia University.
