  Who can stay friends
Posted by: Ndlovu - 04-01-2007, 09:23 PM - Forum: A little more personal - No Replies

Hi guys and gals- verry long time no see Sad

I've a dilema that i'm wrestling with. I'm going through a break-up with my now ex-partner that she called for sighting that her feelings for me had changed. Things had not been going swimmingly well but there was never any violence, not even any swearing or shouting matches leading up to this. We'd become stuck in a rut and i was making a valiant attempt to lose weight, therefore gain confidence and the rest that follows on from that. she left her notepad on the dining table one day and in it I read that she had the hots for her piltes instructor- she had been going on a bit about him as though I was her gay friend and might agree... and then a day later read that she really wanted his number I put it to her that all my recent efforts to put some spark back had been in vain as she had dediced that she was going to go for Ryan anway, and would she be kind enough to tell me when I was going to be told had I not read her thoughts in her diary. she declined to comment and has since moved into a flat on her own, this was 10 Decembner. Long story short- we're finalising all the mortgage matters and splitting what we had built up together.

She says she wants to remain friends. I am torn on this - How do you stay friends with someone who has hurt you so badly. and if I'm such an *** why does she want to be friends?

  Accomms in North Coast
Posted by: Sumy - 04-01-2007, 07:07 PM - Forum: Travel and Immigration - No Replies

Hi, I've got some friends who are going to SA at the end of the month... going all over the place, JHB, CT and Durbs.... they just need to find accommodation for Durbs for a few days. They would prefer something on the North Coast. Anyone got any suggestions? They are looking at Umhlanga and Umdloti at the moment. Please don't send links to accommodation sites as they have already trawled the net looking and come up with loads. It would be nice to get some personal experiences and advice. Thanks!

  Virus warning!

Warning For Friday's

There is a dangerous virus going around. It is called WORK.

If you receive WORK from your colleagues, you're boss, or anyone else, via e-mail or any other means, DO NOT TOUCH IT!

This virus wipes out your private life completely. If you should come into contact with WORK, put on your jacket, take two good friends and go straight to the nearest pub. Buy the antidote known as BEER.

Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

Forward this warning immediately to at least 5 friends. Should you realize that you do not have 5 friends, this means that you are already infected and that WORK already controls your life. REMEMBER, THIS VIRUS IS DEADLY!

  Forgetting the Memory
Posted by: The Phoenix - 04-01-2007, 12:35 AM - Forum: Banter and ALL - No Replies

A week or so ago I invested in a Memory Stick. It is 1Gb in size, but really small in dimension, maybe 50mm x 10mm x 2mm. You know the thing. I needed to transport some files regularly from the PC in the office to the laptop in the house. £12. So clever, so smart.

Today, I put it down somewhere safe. I have forgotten where. And it's so small, I can't find it. I have searched everywhere.

So clever, so smart...

Oh dear!

  Of Lights and Other Things
Posted by: The Phoenix - 03-01-2007, 12:20 AM - Forum: Banter and ALL - No Replies

Do you remember the wind and the rain at the weekend?

In my home at the end of the path round the rear of the house is a building. It has a door, and above the door is one of those really useful security lights that is bright, sensor-driven and actually is a good bit of equipment. Except when it doesn't work properly, it's raining, the wind is blowing a gale and I have to go and fix it.

Now it's not often I don my DIY hat. In fact, this isn't even really DIY. It's more a case of 'well they've just put up a new light and it just needs a little adjustment, and I can do that'.

HA - error #1.

Now the smart move would be to wait until there is fine weather. I didn't think of that.

HA - Error #2.

Well anyway, it seemed a good idea at the time. So, I put on my coat, scarf, hat, boots, gloves and took out my electric drill/screwdriver. By the time I got to the end of the drive, to where this light is, I was soaked. It began to dawn on me that this might not exactly be a good idea.

But, hey, I thought: I was there now, and I might as well deal with it. So, I opened the door to stand on the entrance step... and just at that second the wind blew extra hard, wrenched the door from my hand, and as I groped for the door and dropped the drill, the wind pushed the door back hard on its hinges... and the hinges were bent. As I let out typical male expletives (you know... like "dear me, tut tut") I bent down and picked up the drill, and wiped the mud from it with... well, the coat was there. Not wishing to be hit in the face by the door I wedged it open, got up onto the step and reached up to the square metal box of the light. Which, annoyingly, was just slightly too high for me to reach easily. I first tightened one screw on one side. Now, others more experienced than I may have thought well in advance of this stage of events that additional tools might be required for this operation. Sadly, though, I did not. Well how was I to know that this box had a nut on the other side of the screw which turned in perfect harmony with the screw. Should have brought the pliers. Ok, I said to myself, let's try the other side... and much to my deepening despair, the other side was identical. But I persevered for a while and... yes... it seemed that something had moved - I think all that turning had tightened it slightly... So, I adjusted the light to the right angle, and turned down the timer so that it wouldn't stay on for the 5 minutes at which it had previously been set (they had turned the little dial the wrong way I think). I waited. The wind blew, the rain lashed the building, me and the light... yet the box stayed in position. Success.

So, smiling at how I had overcome the odds and beaten both mechanical engineering difficulties and the forces of nature, I closed the door, pushing hard to force the hinges back into place. I stepped away in the light, the sensor had picked me up... I walked away looking back, just waiting for the light to go out. And, it did. After about 18 seconds. As the brightness slowly faded, I was just able to glimpse the light swing downwards again, to point to the ground at the base of the door...

  Cigarette-buying age set to rise
Posted by: mcamp999 - 01-01-2007, 09:59 AM - Forum: Banter and ALL - No Replies

The government is to raise the legal minimum age at which tobacco can be bought in England and Wales from 16 to 18 years from October.
The move, announced by Public Health Minister Caroline Flint, will follow the introduction of a ban on smoking in public and work places in July.

An awareness campaign will be launched in the New Year.

About 9% of 11 to 15-year-olds smoke and ministers hope the move will reduce this figure.

However, experts warned other measures were also needed.

Smoking is dangerous at any age, but the younger people start, the more likely they are to become life-long smokers and to die early

Caroline Flint
Public Health Minister

The government argues that raising the legal age to 18 will make it easier for retailers to spot under-age smokers.

Ministers also believe that bringing the legal age for the purchase of tobacco into line with that of alcohol will reinforce the dangers of smoking to young people.

It will also bring England and Wales into line with Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the US.

Here we go with this years new thread, I hope it works out and that everyone enjoys it.

I've just glanced through the calendar and some look easy, some difficult and others are impossible to reproduce in a forum format, so those we'll have to give a miss or perhaps I can scan them and we can do it that way....

Anyway, here is the first one:

The word below has three useful anagrams. Can you find them?
