Posted by: TracyW - 10-07-2006, 04:09 PM - Forum: Banter and ALL - Replies (16)

I PASSED my Life in the UK test today :jive:

I was a tad nervous and hardly slept last night .... all that for 26 questions or was that 24?? I was confident with the majority of the answers, but there were a few I was not sure about.
Just pleased it's over and done with and now I am off to Cornwall.

Federer wins Wimbledon for the 4th time
Posted by: TheDuck - 09-07-2006, 04:07 PM - Forum: SportsTalk - Replies (4)

Great stuff Roger. Up against his 'nemisis' Rafael Nadal, Federer became the 3rd man to win Wombledon 4 years in a row

a different match but Federer still came through a winner, don't be deceved y the scoreline, it was not as comvincing as it looks.

The first set was a walkover but from then on it was a battle

:tim:

by the way .. listened to this via internet radio and still a great experience

  Recycling
Posted by: mcamp999 - 09-07-2006, 02:59 PM - Forum: Banter and ALL - Replies (1)

Recycling- we all recycle say newpapers etc to save trees but trees are a renewable resource whereas to recycle papers uses a hell of a lot of non renewable fossil fuel. Myth No.1 is that in many of the materials we recycle to prevet resource depletion makes little difference as most are in no danger of running out out in near future-like paper;glass, steel and aluminium-glass being made by sand very abubdant supplies- and aluminium and iron are 2 od the worlds most abundant materials- most raw materials do not go into hmes but into the manufacturing process in one form or another so what we save in our homes makes little difference., when compared say to the millions of tons of steel saved the amount from our homes is extremely tiny.

Myth no 2 is that we have a crisis in finding places to bury our rubbish. There are plenty of large holes/quarryting in say the Uk to bury our waste- and also worth mentioning that only one tenth of household waste in UK is produced whereas the rest comes from Industry.
Incineration is questioned by many but this method is carbon neutral because living matter sucks up much carbon diozide from the air while it is growing as it emits when burned. Some newsprint countries like Sweden use mainly non fossil fuels for power generation.

But recycling does have some uses- the alumimium process needs loads of electricity to refine the ore in question but only about 5% as much energy to recucle. One secret is that a lot of the paper/plastic that we produce is exported to XChina because of their demand when it goes back in empty shipping containers.

Mind you the politicians use recycling as a 'vote winner'.It makes people feel better, but at same times it encorages people to buy more which results in more recycling..

The biggest use of greenhouse gas emissions are the Manufacturing processes but if consumers spend less then emissions will fall! So what can we really do to help the environment......after turning dowm central heating and banning the school run etc etc.

1. Stop flying which is the worse offender to the climate change debate. Air fuel is VAT free the onset of cheap flights has proliferated the situation to the extent that politicians dare hardly effect this type of travel without beig booted out of office.

2.Ask the govt to ban inandescent light bulbs, which waste 90% of energy produced.Use newer fluorescent lamps- mind you we would all look like green monster- meekons but thre energy savings would be colossal.

3. Swith to a diet of ready made meals. Less energy is used overall on mass produced food etc!

4.Trade in your gas guzzler 4x4 for a Toyata Prius-Even trading in for an ordinary saloon would save as much energy for a family in a year as any household would save in 400 years recycling glass. Mind you why are we driving at all!

5.Sell your second home. Duplicating household waste- driving to this place or evcen flying uses loads of energy-

6.Reduce your hygiene standards- Shower once a week- hot water is biggest source of energy consumption.Wash clothes less- if people complain if you smell blame global emissions

7.Buy modern domestic appliances which are more energy efficient-assuming you don't fly tip the old household machines

8.Buy from countries that use renewable energy sources like Sweden and not China which uses fossil fuels.Use wood products which are renewable not plastic items which use non renewables. In short shop at Ikea!

9.Join the Human extinction Movements- a deep ecology organisation which believes the human race should cease to breed. What is the point of saving the planet if no one lives on it!

10.Recycle if you like but kid you not that it will make any difference.Saving the planet does mean sacrifice bearing in mind the old rule no pain no gain!

Got back home yesterday to discover that some truck driver had tried to drive down our little lane and managed to rip the overhead telephone cables off.

Phoned BT at work this morning and was informed that
a) they did not know about it............... theres a surprise and
b) it will get fixed soon but cannot tell you when.

I told them that the cable was a danger as young children arein the lane and it is at the height where a child can grab it, that or the sheep can munch it (shoud be interesting). Got the same reply as B.

So we will see when I get back tonight.
