Simplicity is the joy of life
Posted by: Pronkertjie - 05-07-2006, 11:11 PM - Forum: Your Religion - Replies (3)

One of the reasons for our rushed lives could be our desire to have many earthly possessions. We exhaust ourselves so as to afford a new car, a house, a holiday, furniture, the children's education ... We worry today about the problems and expenses of tomorrow.

But listen to this: God measures out food of grace only one day at a time (Matthew 6:11). He provides in all our needs – one day at a time. But when we appoint ourselves as the architect and owner-builder of all our future plans, that is when our faith diminishes and the speed at which we live increases by the day, so much so that we have to devise all kinds of plans to get more unnecessary food on the table.

The solution is to hand over full control of the building plans of our lives to God. He should be the only Builder of the house of our life. Then we will move forward in the right direction, one day at a time. We will no longer have unnecessary man-made building plans in our lives that sap our energy and swallow our faith. Peace and simplicity will become the most precious possessions we have – gifts bestowed on us by the Lord!

Remember: God gives life one day at a time. Therefore, honour him by the way you live your life today.

  Children and Pensions
Posted by: TheDuck - 05-07-2006, 10:10 AM - Forum: Banter and ALL - Replies (11)

was not thinking and thought Wink

shouldn't people who have children be given more support and even a higher pension from the state if they have children, as opposed to those who don't have children.

Are married couples not taxed more than others?

I don't know much but tax should be lower for married couples?

Should DINKs be taxed more for instance

any thoughts

Hey what is everyone READING ?
Posted by: nikkinaz - 04-07-2006, 05:50 PM - Forum: The Book Club - Replies (7)

What are you currently reading ?

I just finished a book which I enjoyed thoroughly, it is full of family life a real warm story with so many human touches. I have never read an Anne Tyler book although she features in many reviews. This one I highly recommend.

Digging to America by Anne Tyler

It was Friday, August 15th, 1997. The night the girls arrived. Two tiny Korean babies are delivered to Baltimore to two families who have no more in common than this. First, there are the Donaldsons, decent Brad and homespun, tenacious Bitsy (with her 'more organic than thou' airs, who believes fervently that life can always be improved), two full sets of grandparents and a host of big-boned, confident relatives, taking delivery with characteristic American razzmatazz. Then there are the Yazdans, pretty, nervous Ziba (her family 'only one generation removed from the bazaar') and carefully assimilated Sami, with his elegant, elusive Iranian-born widowed mother Maryam, the grandmother-to-be, receiving their little bundle with wondering discretion. Every year, on the anniversary of 'Arrival Day', their two extended families celebrate together, with more and more elaborately competitive parties, as tiny, delicate Susan, wholesome, stocky Jin-ho, and later, her new little sister Xiu-Mei, take roots, become American... While Maryam, the optimistic pessimist, confident that if things go wrong - as well they may - she will manage as she has before, contrarily preserves her 'outsider' status, as if to prove that, despite her passport, she is only a guest in this bewildering country. Full of achingly hilarious moments (Xiu-Mei's 'pacifier' party is worthy of 'The Simpsons') and toe-curling misunderstandings, "Digging to America" is a novel with a deceptively small domestic canvas, and subtly large themes - it's about belonging and otherness, about insiders and outsiders, pride and prejudice, young love and unexpected old love, families and the impossibility of ever getting it right, and about striving for connection and goodness against all the odds... And, the end catches you by the throat, ambushes your emotions when you least expect it, as only Tyler can.

A stupid crazy idiots run in an area unknown
Posted by: TheDuck - 04-07-2006, 11:10 AM - Forum: Your Health, Fitness and Wellbeing - Replies (7)

Well there you have it ... running on empty

last night I decided to go for a run, a nice 1hr gallop. Now firstly, because I couldn't find my stopwatch I said to myself that if I cant find it, then I mustnt run.

As things go, my son found where his sister had placed it.

So off I go with the new sun visor, after telling wifey I would be out for an hour and the run I would be doing (the route I would be taking). All is going well and the pleasant jaunt with my new sun visor (7.30pm at night) .. galloping along going through the town and thinking how good I felt after 27mins.

So I decide to do this route which would be longer and all I needed to do was proceed straight for a little while and then turn right, go thru this town and then continue upon a route I knew which would take me home.

The turn should come up with 45mins on the clock .. no doubt .. a little further .. no maybe 50mins ... and so it proceeded till I finally turned 1hr and 7minutes into the run. To my dismay I see that I need to cover 7km till the town I need to pass through to get to the last 5km home.

1hr 41 and I arrive on the outskirts of the town .. I stop at a house and ask for a drink of water .. they don't have outside taps in these quarters .. and this will be the first and final drink

well .. not one for telling a long story Wink ... I proceed to the end of the town and begin the journey home .. finally approaching 2.4km to go .. nope not the army 2.4 .. with the sun now set and the legs and body asking the stupid question of what exactly is going on here ... I waddle the last part home ...

The run 2hr 29mins ... 10pm when I stagger through the door and maybe an unplanned distance of 25 to 26km covered

Now hopefully that will be the last time I run in areas I cannot fathom the real distances of .. if one had planned to be out for 2.30 hrs it would be fine

to say I was knackered would be putting it lightly .. and Dear nataliiie the various thoughts during this sojourn became more bizarre after 1hr and then 1:30 and so on

never say never but surely never again

:mmm:

Payback time: Zuma sues media for R63m

With Zuma's corruption trial starting at the end of July, perhaps he realises that he faces another huge legal bill.. :innocent:

Not to muddy the waters or anything, but maybe his appearances at the corruption trial will be delayed as he'll already be in court seeking damages for comment on his previous trial :wall:

If he were to win any of his cases.. I hope that he simply donated the monies to the organisations that inform the public about HIV and AIDS. It might go a little way to obscure his gaffes made in front of the judge recently.
