How to run your home PC for nothing - WHY PAY FOR SOFTWARE.
Posted by: Hampshire Hog - 22-12-2004, 11:46 AM - Forum: Your Computers, Gadgets and Software - No Replies

For the benefit of those of you that may like to take the opportunity of having FREE software to use on their computer, there is an article in the current edition of Computer Active (Issue 179 – cost £1.35) that tells you how. Available from Newsagents from 23rd December 2004 (I get mine early by subscription)

See their link below.
http://www.computeractive.co.uk/magazine/nextissue

See the feature on page 32 – 37 which explains everything. This is your big chance to see how you can benefit from Linux and the Open Source community. It goes on to explain in some detail on how you can add Linux to an existing Window$ PC or if you have on older PC you can fully install Linux on that PC instead. The recommended choice they give is Mandrake as being one of the easier systems for beginners and novices to start with. However there are many other “versions” to choose from out there depending on what you want from your PC.

Good luck to those of you who do take the plunge.

Regards and happy SAFER Surfing Confusedurfing:

Been using this fantastic little program for some time now.
PC to PC calls with sound quality that is so good it sounds as if the person youre talking to is sat there in the room with you.

Friendly interface , very similar to MSN messenger - but with superior sound quality.

http://www.skype.com its a small 10 meg d/load and its free - doesnt appear to have any spyware etc ..

A fake Lycos screensaver was distributed in e-mails on December 6th, 2004. The executable file attached to those e-mails was supposed to be the famous Lycos' 'Make Love Not Spam' screensaver that was attacking sites advertised by spammers (this project is now closed). Instead the file attached to those e-mails was a self-extracting RAR archive designed to drop a Perfect Keylogger components to a hard drive. Perfect Keylogger is an application to monitor what keys a user presses and to save this data to a file. The primary objective of such tools is to spy against users of affected computers.
