  Green Aphids
Posted by: dudette - 05-06-2004, 11:47 AM - Forum: Flora - Replies (3)

We suddenly have a major major infestation of aphids which is attacking the leaves of our plum tree and I wondered if anyone knew of what I can do to get rid of these pests on a grand scale? They haven't gone anywhere near my petunias yet, but I found it very strange they would have gone for the plum tree.

I'm a lone parent with a 2 year old son. I find it really tough financially & lonely living in a new country & raising a child on my own. I know there are a few lone parents on these boards. Perhaps we could use this thread to support each other? :dazed:

Here are some links to websites that offer good support:

It's easier to label than to love

LABEL OR LOVE? ---------------
by Max Lucado

Recently we took our kids on a vacation to a historical city. While
going on a tour through an old house, we followed a family from NewYork City. They didnÂ’t tell me they were from New York. They didnÂ’t have to. I could tell. They wore New York City clothes. Their teenager had one half of his head shaved and on the other half of his head, his hair hung past his shoulders. The daughter wore layered clothes and long beads. The mother looked like sheÂ’d raided her daughterÂ’s closet, and the dadÂ’s hair was down the back of his neck.

I had them all figured out. The kid was probably on drugs. The parents were going through a midlife crisis. They were rich and miserable and in need of counseling. Good thing I was nearby in case they wanted spiritual counsel.

After a few moments they introduced themselves. I was right; they were from New York City. But that is all I got right. When I told them my name, they were flabbergasted. “We can’t believe it!” they said. “We’veread your books. We use them in our Sunday school class in church. I tried to get over to hear you when you spoke in our area, but that was our family night and …”

Sunday school? Church? Family night? Oh, boy. IÂ’d made a mistake. A big mistake. IÂ’d applied the label before examining the contents.

WeÂ’ve all used labels. We stick them on jars and manila folders so
weÂ’ll know whatÂ’s inside. We also stick them on people for the same reason.

John tells of a time the disciples applied a label. Jesus and his
followers came upon a man who had been blind from birth. Here is the question the disciples asked Jesus: “Teacher, whose sin caused this man to be born blind—his own sin or his parents’ sin?” (John 9:2).

Never mind that the man is a beggar in need of help. Never mind that the man has spent his life in a dark cave. Never mind that the man seated in front of them is in earshot of their voices. LetÂ’s talk about his sin.

How could they be so harsh? So insensitive? So Â… blind.

The answer? (You may not like it.) ItÂ’s easier to talk about a person than to help a person. ItÂ’s easier to debate homosexuality than to be a friend to a gay person. ItÂ’s easier to discuss divorce than to help the divorced. ItÂ’s easier to argue abortion than to support an orphanage. ItÂ’s easier to complain about the welfare system than to help the poor.

ItÂ’s easier to label than to love.

Is that to say we should be unconcerned for doctrine or lax in a desire for holiness? Absolutely not. That is to say there is something wrong with applying the label before examining the contents.

ItÂ’s easier to label than to love.

The following are different answers given by school-age children to the given questions:

Why did God make mothers?
1.-She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2.-Think about it, it was the best way to get more people.
3.-Mostly to clean the house.
4.-To help us out of there when we were getting born.

How did your mom meet your dad?
1.- Mom was working in a store and dad was shoplifting.

What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?

Why did your mom marry your dad?
1.- My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot.
2.- She got too old to do anything else with him.

What's the difference between moms and dads?
1.- Moms work at work and work at home, and dads just got to work at work.
2.- Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3.- Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you gotta ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's.

Who remembers Springbok radio?
What programmes did you listen to?

As a child I remember listening to
"chappie chipmunk"
"Jet Jungle"
And on a friday night as I was allowed to stay up a bit later "Squad cars".

Most of these were from the early to mid 70's before tv came out in S.A.

Hope I have posted this in the right section.

The curious incident of the dog in the night time
Posted by: Surita - 03-06-2004, 08:15 AM - Forum: The Book Club - Replies (7)

Yesterday I gave up the struggle with my mammoth Afrikaans book and I bought this book purely because I had to buy a third book. You konw the specials - buy 2 get on free.

Well I started the Curious Incident last night at around six and it was finished by 10 last night. What an absolutely amazing book. I really really enjoyed it.

I don't want to tell too much about the book but it is basically about an autistic boy and his views on the world.

I would love to hear other people's views on this one.
